Before you start mountain biking you really need to consider the type of riding that you will be enjoying. The are several types of bikes for you to choose from and with these mountain bike tips you will be able to make a knowledgeable decision on which bike is going to be best for you.

You love the idea of purchasing your very own mountain bike but it can become overwhelming when you begin to research which bike is best for you. Some of things you consider are price (of course), size of the bike, color and maybe even ease of use. You have been in a sporting goods store before and noticed that some mountain bikes seem harder to operate than others. But when it comes to purchasing the perfect mountain bike for you, this article has all the details you will ever need.

If you are new to cycling, the first thing you may notice is just how many different types of bikes are available these days. Choosing the right bike can be down right daunting, but it doesn’t have to be. Let’s try to clear things up. . .

No one bike can do everything. The first thing you need to consider is how you want to use the bike. Are you going to be using it mostly on the road? Do you want to take it off-road? Unless you’re looking for a trick bike, beach cruiser, or other specialty type bike, there are really three main types of bikes: road bikes, mountain bikes and hybrid bikes.

There are several different types of mountain bikes currently available and the type you choose will be determined by the type of mountain biking you want to do. So with some research and by making some decisions you will find out what you want and then decide on the perfect mountain bike for your needs.

Firstly you need to learn about which different types of best mountain bikes brands are actually available.

XC Cross Country Mountain Bikes

Probably the most popular mountain bike is the cross country bike. These cross-country mountain bikes are now the favorite bike among many of the newer riders. The reason for this is that XC bikes are built to be extremely light in weight. The advantage of this is that it makes it much easier to ride this type of mountain bike over hills and steeper and rougher terrain, without having to get off and walk.

So it’s not really surprising that cross country mountain bikes are so popular and they have become the best selling mountain bike of choice for many. You may even find some bikers using their XC bikes to travel to and from their place of work. Some of these bikes are full-suspension and others may be hardtails and the one you choose really depends on where you will be doing most of your riding.

A couple of useful tips you should remember are that on rougher terrain a full suspension bike makes a huge difference to your ride quality and that hard tails tend to be lighter and faster, but don’t provide such a comfortable ride.

DH Downhill Mountain Bikes

For the more experienced mountain biker the attraction of a downhill mountain bike is great. These well built bikes will almost always have heavy duty front and rear suspensions and full-on disc brakes. And you will also find that many downhill bikers will custom build their bikes to their own specifications.

On tip to remember here is that you need to be very experienced before you try downhill mountain biking as it is dangerous and you could get hurt! The guys that do this always wear special protective gear and strong full face helmets and if you want to watch some extreme biking action you should go and see some of these guys perform. As well as riding at hide speed on extreme mountain terrain they will often do high jumps too at different locations on their downhill trail.

PRO Professional Mountain Bikes

And of course, there are also the professional grade specialized mountain bikes built specifically for racing and mountain bike competitions. As you might expect, and just like those built for downhill mountain bikers, professional MTB bikes are bought by the most skilled of all bikers, who are really good mountain bikers with a lot of experience in both riding and competing.

These bikes are made of high quality and very light materials which means they are also very expensive to buy and some manufactures will only provide these bikes to their team riders for racing. These bikes also tend to be very strong and you will require a lot of skill to ride these correctly and get the most out of them.

Recreational Mountain Bikes

For those that don’t need the high tech and high spec of a mountain bike from the XC, DH or PRO ranges there are a wide variety of more general use mountain bikes for recreational purposes. These are a good bike to start with and they are especially suitable for families as there will be bikes in these ranges for everyone in the family.

You can get the benefit of full suspension for ride comfort even if you and you kids do most of your riding on the road. With suspension forks at the front and rear of the mountain bike you will be able to go off-road in comfort and try mountain biking in it’s real environment and have a lot of fun while doing so!

Consider these mountain bike tips on where to buy what you need. Apart from the professional bikes, you should be able to find most of the other types of mountain bike for sale at your local biking store or go online to find the best deals. Recreation mountain bikes may even be available from your local department store. But for better advice and technical knowledge you should visit a mountain bike shop and also test your favorite bike before you buy.

Mountain Bike Safety

Always remember though that whatever type of mountain bike you eventually choose to buy, you must make sure that your safety is well protected when you are out riding, even for short rides. So make the effort to always wear the proper safety equipment. A helmet is essential at all times!

So choose the best mountain bike for your ability, riding location and budget. Then go out and enjoy yourself, but ride safely!

Not all manufacturing jobs are created equal — and certainly not manufacturing pay. According to a new study released by Brookings? Metropolitan Policy Program, manufacturing wages differ widely between large cities. Workers in McAllen, Texas, earn an average of roughly $35,000 per year, while those in Silicon Valley earn an average of more than four times that. 24/7 Wall St. reviewed the 10 cities with the highest-paid manufacturing jobs.

24/7 Wall St.: The worst states to get a raise

The Brookings report performed a detailed study of the composition and pay of manufacturing in the nation?s 100 largest metropolitan regions. It appears that the biggest determinant of whether manufacturing jobs are high- or low-paying is the type of industry or industries operating in the region. High-tech manufacturing positions, which include the production of computers and electronics, pharmaceuticals and medicines, and aerospace products and parts, pay the highest salaries.

These three categories have the first, second and fourth highest average wages of all types of manufacturing. Computer and electronics manufacturers make an average of more than $95,000, and those in pharmaceuticals production earn an average of more than $100,000. Many of the production jobs in nine of these 10 cities are in one of these three high-tech categories. Oxnard-Thousand Oaks-Ventura, Calif., has large pharmaceutical and computer parts industries.

On top of a region having one or more of these three high-paying industries, there appears to be other drivers in play. Based on the configurations of industries in these cities, Brookings estimated what the average salary should be in these areas. Even then, the actual average manufacturing wages in nine of these regions were 20 percent higher than their expected wages. In the case of San Jose, the actual average manufacturing salary of $144,899 was more than double the expected wage considering its industry makeup.

24/7 Wall St.: America’s favorite beers

The Brookings Metropolitan Policy Program?s report, “Locating American Manufacturing: Trends in the Geography of Production,”?provided detailed information on the major types of manufacturing in each of the 100 largest metropolitan regions in the country. Included in this report is the average wage across all industries, the wage for those in all manufacturing jobs, as well as the average wage for those in high-tech manufacturing jobs.

These are the 10 cities where manufacturing pays the highest.

1. San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara, California

?Average manufacturing wage:?$144,899

?Average wage:?$92,574 (the highest)

?Industry focus:?computers and electronics

?Share of total jobs in manufacturing:?17.5 percent (2nd highest)

?Dollars above expected earnings:?$72,544 (the highest)

San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara, better known as Silicon Valley, is the country?s most important high-tech center. Of the region?s 872,000 jobs, 17.5 percent, or 153,000, are in manufacturing. About 74.6 percent of these jobs are classified as high-tech positions, making it the most high-tech specialized major city in the United States. Computers and electronics are by far the region?s largest output, accounting for nearly 70 percent of all manufacturing jobs. Of the largest metro regions in the U.S., San Jose has the highest average pay in every category. The average salary for a high-tech position is $164,796, more than $70,000 more than the average wage across all positions in the area.

2. Bridgeport-Stamford-Norwalk,?Connecticut

?Average manufacturing wage:?$95,507

?Average wage:?$83,030 (2nd highest)

?Industry focus:?aerospace, machinery, computers and electronics

?Share of total jobs in manufacturing:?9.0 percent (36th highest)

?Dollars above expected earnings:?$28,062 (3rd highest)

The Bridgeport-Stamford-Norwalk, Connecticut metro region, which comprises all of Fairfield country, has a slightly larger manufacturing industry than the national average. These jobs are diversified, with several different areas of specialization, including machinery production and computers and electronics. By far, the largest is the aerospace sector, which accounts for 23.7 percent of all manufacturing jobs. Of the region?s 36,914 manufacturing positions, 41.8 percent of them are high-tech positions. The average pay for a job in this category is $114,071.

3. San Francisco-Oakland-Fremont, California

?Average manufacturing wage:?$91,761

?Average wage:?$70,976 (3rd highest)

?Industry focus:?computers and electronics, food, pharmaceuticals

?Share of total jobs in manufacturing:?6.0 percent (26th lowest)

?Dollars above expected earnings:?$30,739 (2nd highest)

The San Francisco-Oakland-Fremont area is the largest of the four California metro regions to make it on this list. It also has the third-highest average manufacturing wage in the country of more than $90,000. San Francisco manufacturing jobs are diversified across a variety of sectors, but among the largest of these are computers and electronics, at 21.6 percent, and food and pharmaceuticals, at 11 percent and 10.3 percent, respectively. According to Brooking?s assessment of the composition of San Francisco?s industry, workers are getting paid an average of more than $30,000 more than workers in a city with a similar composition.

24/7 Wall St.: Six cities where rents are skyrocketing

4. Austin-Round Rock, Texas

?Average manufacturing wage:?$88,026

?Average wage:?$50,115 (24th highest)

?Industry focus:?computers and electronics

?Share of total jobs in manufacturing:?6.0 percent (27th lowest)

?Dollars above expected earnings:?$23,707 (4th highest)

While manufacturing jobs in the Austin metro region took a severe dive for most of the past decade, they began to rebound in the past few years. Between the first quarter of 2010 and the fourth quarter of 2011, manufacturing jobs increased 7.2 percent, more than two and a half times the national growth rate. Austin is one of the most high-tech specialized cities in the country, with 53.6 percent of manufacturing jobs classified as high-tech compared to the national average of just 16.1 percent. Those in high-tech manufacturing jobs in the region are paid an average of $118,416, approximately $68,000 more than the average pay across all jobs in the area.

5. Oxnard-Thousand Oaks-Ventura, California

?Average manufacturing wage:?$87,502

?Average wage:?$52,193 (19th highest)

?Industry focus:?computers and electronics, pharmaceuticals

?Share of total jobs in manufacturing:?10.4 percent (23rd highest)

?Dollars above expected earnings:?$21,483 (7th highest)

Manufacturing in the Oxnard-Thousand Oaks-Ventura declined 22.2 percent, less than the national decline of 33.2 percent. However, between the beginning of 2010 and the end of 2011, those jobs decreased by 3.3 percent, more than all but a handful of the largest cities in the country. Oxnard?s manufacturing industry specializes in information technology, with computers and electronics representing 22.5 percent of manufacturing jobs. Pharmaceuticals come in second, at 20.1 percent. The average manufacturing wage in the region is $87,502 — roughly $35,000 more than the regional average wage.

cedarhillbilly writes “In his new book The Geek Manifesto, Mark Henderson ‘pleads for citizens who value science to force it onto the mainstream political agenda and other main walks of life.’ There are some important questions that need answers: ‘Do you have to give up your tech practice to undertake a public role?’ Also, ‘Is political life (compromise, working by consensus, irrationality) antithetical to the “geek” values?’” The Guardian’s coverage sums up the idea nicely: “What I desperately want is a move toward an evidence-based culture in politics. Politicians are free to say: ‘I think people on drugs should be punished because drugs are immoral.’ That’s a moral call, albeit a rather stupid one in my opinion. What they shouldn’t do is say: ‘I want to reduce drug use, and sending all users to prison is the most cost-effective way to achieve that.’ That’s not at moral call, it’s a factual statement; as such it should be evidence-based, or else the person making it should shut the hell up.”

 Friday, May 18, 2012

In our everyday life, we use gasoline, diesel, plastics, rubbers, and numerous chemicals that are derived from fossil oil through petrochemical refinery processes. Fossil resources are limited and not sustainable. Our world is facing problems associated with climate change and other environmental problems resulted from lavish consumption of fossil fuels. One solution to address these problems is to use renewable, non-food biomass for the production of chemicals, fuels, and materials through biorefineries.

In their paper published online in Nature Chemical Biology on May 17th, Professor Sang Yup Lee and his colleagues at the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), newly present general strategies for systems metabolic engineering to develop microorganisms for the production of natural and non-natural chemicals from renewable biomass.

Microorganisms are used as biocatalysts to convert biomass into the products of interest. When microorganisms are isolated from nature, however, their efficiency of producing desired chemicals and materials is rather low. Metabolic engineering is performed to improve cellular characteristics to desired levels.

Over the last decade, great advances have been made in systems biology that allows system-wide characterization of cellular networks, both qualitatively and quantitatively, followed by whole-cell level engineering based on these findings. Furthermore, rapid advances in synthetic biology allow design and synthesis of fine controlled metabolic and gene regulatory circuits. The strategies and methods of systems biology and synthetic biology are rapidly integrated with metabolic engineering, thus resulting in “systems metabolic engineering.”

According to the paper, the researchers classified the chemicals to be produced into four categories based on whether they have been identified thus far to exist in nature (natural vs. non-natural) and they can be produced by inherent pathways of microorganisms (inherent, noninherent, or created): natural-inherent, natural-noninherent, non-natural-noninherent, and non-natural-created ones.

General strategies for systems metabolic engineering of microorganisms for the production of these chemicals using various tools and methods based on omics, genome-scale metabolic modeling and simulation, evolutionary engineering, and synthetic biology are suggested with relevant examples. For the production of non-natural chemicals, strategies for the construction of synthetic metabolic pathways are also suggested. Having collected diverse tools and methods for systems metabolic engineering, the authors also suggest how to use them and their possible limitations.

Professor Sang Yup Lee said, “It is expected that increasing number of chemicals and materials will be produced through biorefineries. We are now equipped with new strategies for developing microbial strains that can produce our desired products at very high efficiencies, thus allowing cost competitiveness to those produced by petrochemical refineries.”

As copper prices hit a record four month low, many investors have been wondering if now is the time to buy up resources of this useful metal that is essential to many industries. However, those looking to invest in the metals market should do so cautiously, not least because of the downward trend that copper has suffered in the first half of 2012.

?

The low copper prices that have emerged recently were not expected at the beginning of this year; it is only within the last month or so that the extent to which the price of copper stocks has fallen has been realised. Prices were expected to increase due to a combination of global political and economic events in recent times; unfortunately, this hasn?t been the case.

?

Expectations for this metal revolved around, in the main, the assumption of the continued growth of the world?s biggest consumer of copper, China. With a rapidly-expanding infrastructure, China?s need for copper has continued to keep prices afloat; combined with labour disputes interrupting production in Indonesia and Peru, copper stocks were expected to outperform other metals on the stock exchange.

?

However, prices have fallen, and now may seem like an excellent time to invest in this essential metal. China?s growth rate, while it may have slowed, is likely to pick up again, and as a contender for a new world superpower, its need for copper is only likely to increase. With foresight, investing in copper now could pay off when this renewed growth begins again.

?

But copper prices fell not only because of China?s halted growth, but because of continuing concerns of the stability of Europe?s economy, in particular Greek banks. With many European countries under ?austerity measures? and banks being forced under tighter regulation, external investors and stockholders are unsure as to how this will affect the rapid and easy flow of commodities ? like copper ? through the continent. Similarly, the US has much to do to catch up to its former strength as an economic powerhouse and assuage stockbroker fears.

?

It is unlikely that the European economies will be recovering from the widespread and endemic economic problem they are facing any time soon, so while the potential for copper investors to profit is there, thanks to the assured eventual growth of China, economic problems in the continent and the USA are likely to significantly slow down the recuperation of returns from copper stocks.

?

Discovered in a coal mine in Colombia in 2005, the turtle was given the name?Carbonemys cofrinii, which means “coal turtle.” It wasn’t until now that the turtle was examined and described in a scientific journal; the findings are detailed online today (May 17) in the Journal of Systematic Paleontology.

The researchers say?C. cofrinii?belongs to a group of side-necked turtles known as?pelomedusoides. The turtle’s skull, roughly the size of an NFL football, was the most complete of the fossil remains.

In addition to its colossal size, the turtle would have been equipped with massive, powerful jaws, meaning it could’ve eaten just about anything in its range, from mollusks (a?group that includes snails) to smaller turtles and?even crocodiles, the researchers noted.

Its all-encompassing appetite as well as its need for a large range to satiate its food requirements may explain why no other turtle of this size has been found at the site. [Gallery: The World's Biggest Beasts]

“It’s like having one big snapping turtle living in the middle of a lake,” study researcher Dan Ksepka, of North Carolina State University, said in a statement. “That turtle survives because it has eaten all of the major competitors for resources.”

While the researchers have found bite marks on the remains of other side-necked turtles in the area, suggesting they were preyed upon by crocodilians, such predators would not have messed with this coal mine turtle. “In fact smaller crocs would have been easy prey for this behemoth,” Ksepka said.

The researchers also discovered?a turtle shell?nearby that they believe belonged to the same species; the shell would’ve been large enough to double as a kiddy swimming pool, they noted, as it measured some 5 feet 7 inches (172 centimeters) across.

“We had recovered smaller turtle specimens from the site. But after spending about four days working on uncovering the shell, I realized that this particular turtle was the biggest anyone had found in this area for this time period ? and it gave us the first?evidence of gigantism?in freshwater turtles,” Edwin Cadena, also of North Carolina State, said in a statement.

In fact, this big turtle appeared 5 million years after the dinosaurs vanished, at a time when gigantism was relatively common in this part of South America. For instance, the largest snake ever discovered, measuring 45 feet (14 meters) long and called?Titanoboa cerrejonensis,?lived there, also about 60 million years ago.

A combination of factors, including abundant food, fewer predators, vast habitat and climate change, would have worked together to allow turtles and other animals to balloon to such relatively gargantuan sizes, the researchers suggest.

For instance, the warm weather would’ve been beneficial for such ectotherms that rely on their surroundings to regulate their body temperature.

“The environment seems to have been tropical based on fossil plants found at the site,” Ksepka told LiveScience. “And the turtle appears to have been adapted to spending most of its time in the water, though coming ashore to lay eggs would be part of its life cycle.”

Another turtle discovered in this coal mine may have evolved an adaptation to protect itself from these giants; the turtle, called Cerrejonemys wayuunaiki,?sported an extra-thick shell, about the thickness of a high-school textbook.

The research, funded by the Smithsonian Institute and the National Science Foundation, will be detailed in the June 2012 print issue of the Journal of Systematic Paleontology.

FRESNO, Calif. (AP) ? The nation called Ed Ray a hero when he led a terrified group of children to safety after they were kidnapped aboard their school bus and held underground for ransom in the summer of 1976.

But the unassuming bus driver from a dusty farm town in Central California never saw himself that way, even after news of the infamous Chowchilla kidnapping grabbed headlines and inspired a TV movie.

As for the 26 children he saved, Ray became their lifelong friend until he died Thursday at 91 from complications of cirrhosis of the liver.

“I remember him making me feel safe,” said Jodi Medrano, who was 10 when three men hijacked the school bus and stashed the group in a hot, stuffy storage van in a rock quarry.

Medrano held a flashlight as the bus driver worked with older students to stack mattresses, force an opening and remove the dirt covering the van so they could escape after 16 hours underground. She never left Ray’s side during the ordeal.

“I remember he actually got onto me because I swore,” said Medrano, now 46. “Mr. Ray said, ‘you knock that off.’ I thought, whenever we get home I will be in so much trouble. That’s when I knew I was going home, because he made me have that hope.”

Medrano, who now runs a hair salon in Chowchilla, where the hijacking occurred, said she kept in touch with Ray throughout her life. Many of the other children went on to live in Chowchilla as adults and regularly visited the aging bus driver.

“Mr. Ray was a very quiet, strong, humble man. He has a very special place in my heart and I loved him very much,” Medrano said, crying.

The dramatic ordeal and Ray’s role in it left an indelible mark on Chowchilla, where Ray and most of the children lived. The city then had a population of 5,000.

Residents were terrorized when the bus vanished, and their fears were fueled by other crimes in the state ? the Charles Manson killings, the serial killing of 26 farmworkers, the Patty Hearst kidnapping and the Zodiac serial killer who remained at large.

As word of the disappearance spread, hundreds of reporters from around the country swarmed the town, clogging phone lines. Search parties and airplanes scoured the area.

“We sat at home for a long time knowing nothing,” said Ray’s son Glen Ray, who was in his 30s at the time and had rushed home from Arizona.

Five hours after the hijacking, police found the bus, hidden in a drainage slough. It was empty, with no trace of blood or any other clues.

A day later, Ray’s family and frantic parents got word: The bus driver and children, ages 5 to 14, were safe.

Ray, the only adult on board, later recounted how he stopped the bus on that steamy July day to see if people in a broken-down van needed help. Three armed, masked men forced Ray and the children into two vans.

They meandered for hours before stopping at a quarry 100 miles to the north in Livermore. The kidnappers sealed the children and Ray inside the storage van and covered it with 3 feet of dirt as part of their plan to demand $5 million ransom.

At the time, the Chowchilla Police Department was swamped with calls, and the kidnappers decided to take a nap before calling in their demand.

While they slept, Ray and two older children dug themselves to safety.

“He told me that he felt it was his responsibility to get the kids back home to their parents safely, that’s all he could think about,” Ray’s son, Glen Ray, said. His father loved kids and they were his life, the son said.

Ray, who grew corn and alfalfa and raised dairy cows, never boasted about his role in the rescue, his granddaughter Robyn Gomes said.

“The community will remember him as a hero, but it’s not at all how he saw himself,” she said. “He was a remarkable man. If you met him, you loved him. He was that kind of guy.”

Frederick N. Woods and brothers James and Richard Schoenfeld, members of well-to-do San Francisco Peninsula families, were convicted in the kidnapping and sentenced to life in prison. None of the three has been paroled.

The trio, who were in their mid-20s at the time of the kidnapping, said they had fallen into debt because of a failed real estate deal and hatched the elaborate kidnapping as a way to rid themselves of financial worry.

Family members said Ray collected newspaper clippings about the kidnapping and bought the school bus he drove in 1976 for $500 as a memento and because he didn’t want it to go to scrap iron.

“He parked it in the barn and he’d go out and start it once in a while,” Glen Ray said.

He kept the bus for several years then gave it to an old equipment museum in Le Grande, where it’s still available for public viewing.

Ray is survived by his wife, Odessa, his two sons, three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. A funeral services will be held Tuesday at Chowchilla Cemetery.
